The PAL Show Gets New Digs For 2012

The 11th Annual PAL Show, running in tandem with the annual MIAC Show, will be held May 13-14, 2012 at the International Centre, 6900 Airport Road in Mississauga, ON. The show will be located in the newly-renovated Halls 1, 2, and 3, a unified space. Positioned on the airport strip, the International Centre is convenient for travel and offers free parking, competitive pricing on amenities, and affordable entertainment, restaurants, and hotels within short driving distance.

“When scheduling conflicts developed for 2012 at our previous venue, we took the opportunity to examine what our exhibitors and attendees were seeking in our show environment and to look at venues across the country that could meet those requirements. The International Centre, a favourite of many from past shows, came out ahead on all aspects of convenience, facility, and show scheduling,” says Dale Kroke, MIAC Chairman.

Programming for the PAL 2012 Show will make for a very different event. It will be a focused show, bringing the industry together with a series of seminars, CTS renewal sessions, demonstrations, innovation areas, and networking opportunities.

The Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel will once again serve as the official host hotel, offering discounts to PAL exhibitors.

Project Update

DeGraw & Cook Take Clay Paky & MA Lighting On Tour

Singer-songwriters Gavin DeGraw and David Cook recently co-headlined a US tour and Clay Paky Sharpys and an MA Lighting grandMA2 light went along for the ride. Lighting designer/director Scott Warner was responsible for maximizing a limited lighting rig so the headliners and opening acts had a unique look. He also served as the programmer and operator for the tour bands.

Instead of using conventional vertical trusses, Warner opted to create a three-level wall of truss at the back of the stage. “With three levels, it looks like I have three layers of light,” he explains. “On the top level I have nine Sharpys and I frame the bands with them. They’re a fantastic light, and I love that I can instantly move them around so if something is sounding cool on stage, I can go to it.”

As for the grandMA2 Light, Warner says: “It’s a great-looking console and people come up to me to say how cool it is. It’s also very fast; I don’t have to wait for anything.”

Product Spotlight

Chroma-Q Color Block 2 Plus

The new Chroma-Q Color Block 2 Plus is a higher-output version of the original Color Block 2 multi-purpose LED fixture.

Using the latest generation of LED and optics, the unit offers 40 per cent more output (750 lumens) than the original Color Block 2 (530 lumens) when the internal switch is set to full power. It also features a Color Block 2 emulation mode, to simulate the lumen output of the original LED engine when used alongside other Color Block 2 fixtures.

The four large, camera-friendly LED cells offer less glare and mix well for single-colour output. In addition, the fixture provides smooth dimming while retaining the instant control of intensity associated with LED technology.

Altinex DIGI Sniffer Digital Video Signal Detector/Tester

Altinex has introduced its DIGI Sniffer digital video signal detector/tester. A tool for A/V consultants and integrators, it’s designed for measuring digital video signal strength; is compatible with HDMI, DVI, and Display Port signal types; and accommodates any signal resolution.

The product features a six-LED bar graph that shows the strength of the video signal connected to the device. It also monitors the digital video signal and determines the degradation level. The DIGI Sniffer works with both HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection) and non-HDCP signals.

Designed to fit in a pocket, the DIGI Sniffer features auto power control (shut-off) and will only turn on when touched from both sides. By connecting the HDMI cable to the unit, the onboard LEDs will then display signal strength.
