LDI 2011 Leaves Orlando Wanting More

The 2011 LDI Show has come to a close, wrapping up October 30th after a well-received run at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. Backstge Orlando and LDInstitute sessions commenced October 24th, conference sessions began October 27th, and the exhibit hall opened a day later for close to a week of programming.

While final attendance figures aren’t yet available, reports coming back from the show are of a positive nature. Technologically speaking, it seems that advancements in control software and LED technology were dominant at this year’s show, with several manufacturers advancing their product lines and several others debuting product in the two markets.

For more in-depth coverage of this year’s show, pick up a copy of the Winter 2011 issue of Professional Lighting & Production, dropping late November.

USITT “Ideal Theatre” Student Design Competition Open

Architecture and theatre students are invited to participate in USITT’s Sixth Annual “Ideal Theatre” Student Design Competition. The competition encourages students to work with young theatre artists to explore the emotive power of space, how space can aid storytelling, and how it can be manipulated to achieve a dramatic purpose.

The design of the space itself should form the environment of the play, supplemented by costumes, props, lighting, sound, actors, and the audience. Winning design teams will interact with working professionals, receive free USITT Conference registrations and cash prizes. A jury of professionals will select three projects for Honor Awards. The three teams will be invited to the USITT Conference & Stage Expo in March 2012 to present their designs. Past winners have included teams from Iran, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the US.

Applications are due by November 17, 2011 and the deadline for completed submissions is January 6, 2012.

For additional information, including a design brief, application, and prize list, visit www.usitt.org/StudentArchitecture.aspx.

Commemorating The 100-Year Discovery Of Machu Picchu

Wireless Solution Sweden AB sent its W-DMX technology to Peru for the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of the Quechua citadel of Machu Picchu in 1911 by explorer Hiram Bingham.

The celebration involved lighting the historic city with a vast array of colour from atop the nearby mountains. Two W-DMX F-1 G4 transmitters and receivers were used to send signal to 40 Vari*Lite VL3500 Washes, 20 VL3000 Spots, 20 Martin Professional Atomic 3000 strobes, and two Strong Super Trouper 2K followspots. Gian Franco Di Vitto was the LD and Andres Cuadros was the equipment consultant. An MA Lighting grandMA2 ultra light was used to control lighting programmed by Martin Tolentino with a High End Systems Wholehog III used to control the conventional lighting. The W-DMX system provided the communication between the consoles and the rig with the console and the luminaires located approximately 1,640′ apart.
